When starting to exercise, some people find it helpful to write out a plan, set goals, and track their progress. This chapter includes an exercise log that you can photocopy and keep in a binder. Consider keeping it with the Daily Food and Symptoms Diary provided in chapter twenty.

As you begin to exercise during and after treatment, take it slowly. It is important not to overdo it. Set realistic goals that align with how you are feeling. Start with a more modest program that will help you achieve your goals and feel good about your progress. For some, this may mean walking around the dining room table two or three times a day. For others, it could mean a walk outside or perhaps some gentle stretching or light weights. Talk with your health care team about your exercise program. Surgery and treatment may limit some of your physical abilities. You want to avoid causing any harm. Your team may be able to suggest exercises for you or refer you to a physical therapist or other expert in movement and recovery.
